Artistic Practice
Experience of place is central to Martin’s artistic activity. The encounter with natural and urban landscape sets in motion a myriad of associations and prompts. He finds the dissolving of recognisable form through the action of natural elements profoundly suggestive of the frailty of foothold. Moments of transition that mark the passage of time have special importance in his work. Muted twilight, nocturnal light, vaporous air or dazzling sunlight each tune the character of environments in their own ways.
His working processes set in motion a discourse between abstraction and figuration, often bringing together measured graphic techniques with spontaneous gesture. Working in acrylic opens up possibilities and liberates techniques, allowing movement in an unrestricted way between differing approaches. The immediacy and scope of acrylic paint aligns with his involvement with both the painterly and the graphic.
